SLINKY!
A
CLASSIC AMERICAN TOY
THE
ORIGINAL SLINKY IS BACK!
Slinky...everyone has heard of Slinky!
Slinky is an American classic toy. There are all types of Slinkys. Slinky
is available in silver tone metal. Slinky is available in plastic. There
is even a 14 Karate Gold Slinky! And there are Slinky imitations. But what
we have here is the ORIGINAL SLINKY invented in 1945!
This is the ultimate Slinky. Oh, you thought the $100.00 Brass Slinky
or the $130.00 Gold Slinky was the ultimate Slinky. Not a chance. This
is the one...the $6.95 Original Slinky!
This is a premium Slinky made of extremely tough metal wire. Slinky
was only made this way for a few years because of the expense...until now!
No, this is not the common, less expensive shiny silver metal Slinky
you see in most stores. This is the dark, blue-black Swedish steel Slinky
of yesteryear. This Slinky even comes in the same original box from years
ago...no other Slinky can say that!
This Slinky will "walk" down stairs and move in your hands as if it
were alive. This is the ultimate cool Slinky. For children and adults who
are young at heart! In fact, everyone in our office who saw Slinky sitting
on this web developer's desk had to play with it. Perhaps you should get
an extra one!

SOME SLINKY TRIVIA!
-
Richard James invented Slinky
in 1945 during an experiment with tension springs for the Navy. During
the experiment one of the springs fell to the floor and began to "walk."
He took the spring home to his wife, Betty, and asked her if she thought
it was something they could pursue. Betty had a vision for a toy and scoured
the dictionary, looking for an appropriate name. She came across the word
"Slinky," a Swedish word meaning stealthy, sleek and sinuous.
-
The Slinky debuted at Gimbel's
Department Store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1946. Both Betty and
Richard were skeptical about how the Slinky would sell. Fearing the worst,
Richard gave a friend one dollar to make sure at least one Slinky was sold.
But all their doubts were put to rest when all 400 Slinkys for sale were
purchased in a matter of hours. Since then, over a quarter of a billion
Slinkys have been sold worldwide.
-
The Slinky is still made in
Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania with the original equipment Richard James created.
The only major change to Slinky in 50-odd years was a crimp was added in
1973 to the end of the wire to ensure safe play.
-
The James family still runs
the company this very day.
-
Some very innovative uses have
been found for the Slinky. It has been used in pecan-picking devices in
Texas and Alabama; on lighting fixtures in Harrah’s Casino in Las Vegas
because of the unusual shadows it casts; and as table decorations, drapery
holders, bird repellers, mail holders, therapeutic devices, wave motion
coils, gutter protectors, and in numerous other ways.
-
During the war in Vietnam, soldiers
found that when draped over tree branches, the metal Slinky was an excellent
makeshift radio antenna.
-
Slinky is used by professors
in college courses to teach physics.
-
Slinky is sometimes prescribed
by physical therapists for coordination development.
-
The Slinky toys appeared in
the Disney film Toy Story; John Waters' Hairspray and in Jim Carey's
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls.
-
In 1999, Slinky became one of
the first toys to be officially honored on a U.S. Postal Service stamp
as part of the Celebrate the CenturyTM Series, 1940's Collection.
